Name of project: “A qualitative exploration of treatment experiences in men with an eating disorder”.

Synopsis: This research project addresses the experiences of men with eating disorders, a neglected area in research. The study will use qualitative methodology in order to explore treatment experiences of men with an eating disorder i.e.; from the beginnings of the eating disorder, their experiences seeking help for the eating disorder, their experiences of treatment and (as applicable) recovery. It will investigate gender related issues, for example, the experience of being the solitary man in a treatment program or group. This study will contribute to an understanding of the major issues for men seeking  and/or experiencing treatment for an eating disorder. The thesis will include a review of the research followed by a qualitative examination of grey literature. This will be followed by a series of qualitative analyses of interviews of men who have an eating disorder. Interviews with men who have considered treatment or who are or have been in treatment will comprise the principal data source. The expected sample size is15-20 participants. The interviews will be made via telephone for participants to share their experiences. Interviews will be audio recorded and transcribed verbatim. Transcriptions of interviews will be used to explore the perceived barriers to help seeking and treatment experiences for each participant. Thematic analysis of the interviews will be conducted according to the Framework method as outlined by Ritchie and Spencer (1994) and Pope, Zeibland and Mays (2000).
