Perfectionism, social identity content and feminine identity: Investigating how content of social identities relate to eating disorders

Synopsis: This project will aim to investigate how women with eating disorders (ED) conceptualise their identities from a social identity theory based perspective- that is, what attributes they believe a person who exemplifies a socially based identity has. This research will use a qualitative research design (i.e., an interview) with six participants with three types of eating disorders (Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, and Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder). To properly investigate the identity content, questions asking about belongingness to various identities as well as questions relating to identity content shall be asked. Subsequently, participants will be asked about how perfectionism relates to each of these identities, and how disordered eating relates to perfectionism. This shall be done via an interview that will ask questions about their femininity, their beliefs about other women with eating disorders, and perfectionistic beliefs in relation to their identity.
