NSLHD Annual Body Image and Eating Disorders Awareness Week, Monday 11th September
NSLHD held its annual Body Image and Eating Disorder awareness week event on Monday 11th September, 2017. The theme this year was ‘Hidden Truths: Shining a Light on Eating Disorders.’ The management of consumers with an eating disorder is still evolving in NSLHD and as a result there a still some myths that surround this very complex illness. This year’s event aimed to bust those myths and demystify the illness. Speakers from across the state spoke about the medical, psychological and psychosocial aspects of eating disorders, the use of the Mental Health Act in eating disorder treatment, behavioural management strategies to help contain and support consumers, and the resources available to support clinicians, consumers, families and carers during the recovery journey. The most powerful and moving part of the day was to hear the very moving and emotional journey to recovery of a consumer with a lived experienced. It reminded us that recovery is possible at any stage and didn’t leave a dry eye in the house!
